Shirkat Gah – Women’s Resource Centre is hosting a Cross-Regional Feminist Convening in Thailand from 5th August to 7th August 2019 to fill the perceived gap in the opportunities to connect beyond specific fields and modalities of operations as well as agendas set by others.
The aim of the convening is to strengthen our sub-regional movements by sharing lessons on gender issues so we can set the change agenda.
This convening is part of a 2-year project, FEMPOWER!, being implemented by Shirkat Gah – Women’s Resource Centre in partnership with the Institute for Women’s Empowerment (Indonesia) and the Domestic Workers Union (Sri Lanka) with support from the Women’s Fund Asia. The project aims to strengthen women’s movements by deepening feminist understanding, expanding the number of activists, creating strong solidarity linkages and inserting feminist thinking into other social movements/organizations.
Earlier, we organized South Asia roundtable in Kathmandu, Nepal (2018) and Southeast Asia roundtable in Jakarta, Indonesia (2019). Through these round tables, we provided a platform to community women, women workers, and self-identifying feminists, as well women’s groups to collectively analyze women’s issues, around persistent as well as newly emerging issues and resulted in the drafting of a country-specific charter of demands and a collective feminist vision.
This convening is an extension of our efforts to formulate a regional change agenda in the form of a bottom-up Women’s Charter of Demands (COD) synthesizing priority issues.
We believe that this cross-regional feminist convening will strengthen our ability to understand our complex realities and formulate strategies to strengthen women’s movements and lay the foundation/reinforce strong feminist alliances.
